Appendix A – SCARAB

The SCARAB friction device is made by Conterra, Inc. Conterra designed the device for rappelling and lowering rescue loads. The device and techniques for its use have been extensively tested by the company, and it meets National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards for General Rescue equipment. WHEN USED PROPERLY, the SCARAB is suitable for rescue loads when using the EPCSAR baseline rescue system.

The SCARAB is not difficult to use, but rescuers need to be familiar with how to wrap/thread rope(s) through the device. The figures reproduced in this appendix illustrate the proper way to wrap a SCARAB as well as some incorrect ways to avoid.

While the device is somewhat more complex to wrap than a Rescue 8, the SCARAB has some distinct advantages:

  • It can be wrapped while connected to a harness or anchor, reducing the risk of dropping the device
  • Friction can be increased or decreased without unloading the device or unclipping it from the harness or anchor
  • There is a clear, simple means of locking the device
  • The device can be wrapped with two ropes
